July 6th was quite a day! Per usual, we started very early. Because the sun rises around 5:30 this is typically not too difficult. We took a beautiful hike over to "una finca" that grew all sorts of amazing crops but the main focus was "cafe." The farm was a beautiful assortment of not only coffee plants, but also banana, lemon, and sugar cane. The absence of monoculture is definitely a new concept for all of us used to fields full of corn. The owner was incredibly hospitable and excited to show off his beautiful property. He taught us how to properly use a "trapiche" to crush sugar cane and extract the delicious juices. Everyone was on a sugar high for the good part of the morning. |
Our afternoon was spent discussing ecotourism in Costa Rica. Most of our post lunch activities revolve around stimulating conversation and today was no exception. We have been able to hear the perspectives of local Costa Ricans, or as they prefer to be referred to "ticos," on the importance of ecotourism in the country and the necessity of balance between this and entertainment tourism. We were also able to learn about a more sustainable method of processing waste water called a "biodigester." Hopefully the concepts behind this process will become common in the U.S soon!
The day was finished at a family farm that focused on dairy but dabbled in all sorts of agricultural endeavors. We all enjoyed dinner at Lelo's, feasting on dishes that were as farm to table as it gets. It was the perfect relaxation needed to end the day!
One of the most incredible parts of this Costa Rican experience is the hospitality and kindness granted to our group at every door. The culture down here is defined by a open heart and I'm sure we will all be carrying a piece of that home with us.
